In recent years, the widespread use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has sparked concerns about addiction among both young people and adults. A study conducted at the Behavioral Addictions Unit of Consorci Sanitari de Terrassa (Barcelona, Spain) sheds light on this issue, revealing a notable surge in screen addiction cases, particularly in the context of video games.

The study, which analyzed 118 patients attending the unit between October 2005 and December 2021, divided the sample into three groups based on the time period in which they began treatment. What emerged was a concerning trend: an increase in the incidence of screen addiction cases correlated with the development of technology over the years, with a significant spike during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Interestingly, the study found that the increase in addiction cases was not uniform across all types of online content. While addiction to video games saw a sharp rise, addiction to internet/social networks showed a less pronounced increase. This disparity suggests that different types of digital content may have varying addictive potentials.

Further analysis revealed that patients seeking treatment for video game addiction tended to be younger and had started gaming at an earlier age compared to those with internet/social network addiction. This highlights the vulnerability of young individuals to developing addictive behaviors in the digital realm.

The study also underscored the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on screen addiction, with lockdowns and increased reliance on technology contributing to a further escalation of addiction cases. The shift to remote work, online learning, and socializing via screens normalized excessive screen use, making it difficult for individuals to disengage even after lockdowns were lifted.

While the study provides valuable insights into the prevalence and characteristics of screen addiction, it also highlights the need for effective preventive measures and treatment protocols. Educational programs aimed at promoting healthy technology use and raising awareness about the risks of screen addiction are crucial in addressing this growing public health concern.

In conclusion, the rise of screen addiction in the digital age demands concerted efforts from healthcare providers, educators, and policymakers to safeguard the well-being of individuals, especially young people, in an increasingly digitized world. By understanding the factors contributing to screen addiction and implementing targeted interventions, we can work towards creating a healthier relationship with technology for future generations.
